Build your own pocket-sized sound effects generator with this compact DIY kit. Centred on the classic 9561 sound-generator IC, the BOX-16 produces 16 distinct analog sound effects — everything from doorbell chimes to alarm tones — all selectable through a simple 4-bit binary switch interface. No microcontroller, no firmware, just clean analog circuit design you assemble yourself.

How it works: The circuit is controlled by four binary inputs (A, B, C, D), giving 16 possible combinations and therefore 16 unique sounds. The design splits into two halves: a basic control circuit selects between four core sound types using two binary bits, while an additional control circuit modifies the oscillation parameters of the 9561 via switched resistors (R1, R2, R4, R5), changing the frequency and timbre to derive twelve further variations. Switches S1–S4 set the binary code manually, or external logic signals can drive the inputs for automated triggering.

Circuit breakdown:

  • Sound generation: 9561 IC + Q1 transistor driver + LS1 passive buzzer
  • Basic control: 2-bit binary selection between four core waveforms
  • Additional control: Switched-resistor network alters 9561 oscillation parameters
  • Binary encoder: S1–S4 with pull resistors R6–R9 for manual 4-bit input
