HB100 Microwave Doppler Radar Motion Sensor — 10.525GHz
The HB100 is a 10.525GHz X-band microwave Doppler radar module that detects motion by measuring the Doppler frequency shift of reflected microwave energy. Unlike PIR sensors, it detects motion through non-metallic walls, plastic enclosures, and glass — and works regardless of ambient temperature, making it insensitive to thermal camouflage. The output is a low-frequency analogue voltage proportional to the velocity and direction of moving objects, requiring amplification before connecting to a microcontroller ADC.
- 10.525GHz X-band Doppler radar — sees through plastic, wood, and glass
- Temperature-independent detection — works in hot or cold environments
- Analogue IF output — requires external amplifier (e.g., LM324 op-amp) for MCU use
- 5V supply, low current — approximately 37mA
- Coverage pattern — approximately 10m range, 80° detection angle
| Specification | Value |

| Output | Analogue IF (needs amplifier) |
Why does the HB100 need an amplifier?
The IF output signal from moving objects is typically 0.5–2mV at audio frequencies (10Hz–1kHz for walking speed). This needs at least 40dB of amplification before an Arduino ADC can read it reliably. A simple two-stage LM324 op-amp circuit referenced in the HB100 datasheet amplifies the signal to 0–5V for ADC reading. Without amplification, the signal is lost in noise.
Best for
Through-wall occupancy detection, retail footfall counters, automatic door triggers, covert motion sensing inside sealed enclosures, weather-independent outdoor motion detection, and speed measurement of vehicles or machinery.
