BMP280 Barometric Pressure and Temperature Sensor — 3.3V I2C/SPI

The BMP280 is Bosch's updated barometric pressure sensor with lower noise, lower power consumption, and faster sampling than its predecessor the BMP180. It outputs pressure to +/-1 hPa accuracy and temperature to +/-1°C over I2C or SPI. At ultra-high-resolution mode, pressure noise drops to 0.16 Pa — equivalent to a 1.3cm altitude step. The 1.8V–3.6V supply draws just 2.8 microamps in forced mode, suiting battery-powered weather loggers.

  • +/-1 hPa pressure accuracy — 8.5cm altitude resolution at sea level
  • 0.16 Pa noise in ultra-high-resolution mode — 1.3cm altitude steps
  • I2C and SPI interface — address 0x76 or 0x77 (SDO pin selects)
  • 1.8V–3.6V supply — 2.8 microamps in forced mode
  • Oversampling and filter settings — configurable via registers for noise vs speed trade-off

Is the BMP280 compatible with BMP180 libraries?

Not directly. The BMP280 uses a different register map. Use the Adafruit BMP280 library or the Bosch BME280 library (the BMP280 is a subset of the BME280 without humidity). Both are in the Arduino Library Manager. If you have existing BMP180 code, the migration takes around 10 minutes — mostly replacing the sensor object and adjusting the altitude call.

Best for

Weather stations, drone altitude sensing, indoor climate monitoring, hiking GPS altitude logging, greenhouse pressure monitoring, and battery-powered environmental sensors.

Why Kunkune

Shipped from UK stock. 60-day returns, no minimum order. Fast Royal Mail delivery.

For the highest pressure resolution in the range, the BMP390 offers a noise floor of 0.085 Pa — roughly half that of the BMP280.
